Locate the source of the water and if possible turn it off. If
there is not a way to shut it off use the main shut off valve
usually located by the street.
Call your insurance carrier. After the damage has been assessed you
can decide if a claim should be filed. Your insurance company should
be able to refer you to a mitigation specialist in your area. Most
mitigation specialists are available to assist you 24 hours a day,
365 days a year.
Pick up any loose papers or fabrics off the floor. The dye from them
can bleed into the carpet when it is wet. If the bottom of your
furniture is wood or metal place a small piece of tin foil (Plastic
lids work too) under the legs to prevent wood stain or rust from
damaging the carpet.
Extraction of water may or may not be recommended as overly
aggressive extraction can cause further damage to your flooring. If
you choose to extract, only remove the initial standing water. Your
mitigation specialist can determine what form of water extraction to
use in your home.
Wait for a mitigation expert to arrive. They will be able to answer
any questions you may have.
This is a list of tips to help you, the home owner, minimize the
damage to your home in the event of a water loss. It is the home
owners responsibility to decide which steps are necessary and what
steps to undertake on their own.
